Gmail goes IMAP for iphone
This might not yet be ready for all customers but gmail released imap setting for Gmail accounts. Below you will find step by step directions for setting this up, along with links and videos.
First, enable IMAP in your Gmail account.
- Log in to your Gmail account.
- Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
- Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
- Select Enable IMAP.
Next you will need to set up Gmail on your iphone.
- Enable IMAP in your Gmail account settings.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Mail.
- Tap Add Account.
- Tap Other. (Note: don’t tap Gmail; if you do, you’ll set up POP rather than IMAP. We are aware of this issue and are currently working to make setting up Gmail more intuitive for the iPhone.)
- Make sure that:
- The IMAP tab is highlighted
- Host Name is imap.gmail.com
- User Name is your full Gmail address, including ‘@gmail.com’
- For Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), Host Name is smtp.gmail.com
- Tap Save.
And you’re done. You can verify your Advanced settings by tapping Settings > [your Gmail IMAP Account] > Advanced.

I use Gmail on my iphone 3g..and it always worked fine, until all of a sudden it stopped working. It would not update my email and just say “connecting….” and then “cannot connect to imap.google.com”. It was so frustrating! I tried several things, none of which worked. Finally I got a tip from someone online to just go into gmail on my computer and change my password to something more secure. Up until then my password had just been a simple word, but after changing it to something with a number and longer word in it, gmail worked on my phone again. But gosh it was so frustrating when it wasn’t working.
