Popular Mechanics includes the iphone as one of the 10 most brilliant gadgets of 2007 on their website:
Of course, you’ve heard about this phone. But have you used it? The best way to understand why Apple’s iPhone ($400) has sent shockwaves through the cellphone industry is simply to check your voice mail with it. Instead of passwords and audible instructions, the iPhone displays a visual list of voice mails—which are saved as audio files. Using the bright and responsive touchscreen, you scroll through the list and tap a message. When …

Yesterday Apple released a new website that allows developers to display their iPhone web apps. Thumbing through the application list I don’t really see anything new and exciting, mostly the same apps we’ve seen on other websites, just now they are being endorsed directly by Apple.
Many people feel this is Apple’s attempt to squash the need or want for native 3rd party applications. Yeah I doubt this is going to stop the iPhone dev community.

In yet another attempt to stick to their guns regarding native 3rd party apps for the iPhone, Apple Insider is reporting that Apple is compiling a list of web based apps to display on their website.
Insiders say apple is contacting these developers on the down low asking them to submit website addresses, icons and site information for this list.
It was suggested that this list of “approved” apps could be listed on their site as early as today, update 10:20pm ET and still no list as far as I can tell.

As reported today by Engadget, the iPhone dev community has confirmed that they have entered the highly protected file system. They have gotten all apps up and running along with springboard on v1.1.1. This is a huge step forward in allowing access to installing 3rd party apps back on the iphone for the rest of us. However, this news does come with an asterisks. Apparently this hack takes advantage of a single exploit in mobile safari which the next iphone upgrade will most likely …

As reported by the Unofficial Apple Weblog it seems that jailbreaking v1.1.1 is coming along. They most certainly have a long way to go, but at the speed this is being done I can only guess that it won’t be long before we can place 3rd party apps back on the phone.
Here is their progress thus far:
* Third Party apps run. Kind of. We probably have to recompile many of them for the new frameworks because many of them crash.
* Springboard no longer recognizes DisplayOrder.plist. And the list of …

Rumors are starting surface that Apple will finally start to open it’s doors to 3rd party applications for the iPhone. Now, don’t get too excited yet, these are just rumors. But several reports state that some major software developers have been given permission to start developing applications for the iPhone. As I imagine it these apps will be pushed through iTunes and undoubtedly at a cost.
