iPhone 4.0 Features List
The new iPhone OS 4.0 will be launched sometime this summer for everyone that has an iPhone 3GS. If you have a 3G you’ll get some of the features and if you have the original iPhone you get nothing. Let’s look at what’s coming up on the new iPhone OS…
- Multitasking: Finally the iphone will be able to run apps simultaneously or at least some apps. The multitasking will be limited to GPS apps, VOiP apps and Audio apps (such as Pandora).
- App Switching: For other apps that can’t be used in multitasking (note this will be most apps) you can use the fast app switcher. This allows you to put the app on hold (freeze) it, go do something else then come back to it exactly where you left off. The app will be a dock like setting that you can easily switch back to when ready.
- App Folders: A nice clean app page is soon going to be a reality. Now you can group all your apps together in different folders and have a simple button to click on to get to say your “Games“. Once you click on the games folder it opens and you can view all your games.
- Unified Inboxes: This means that all your mail can come in from gmail, yahoo, hotmail etc and be located in a single inbox. This way you don’t have to check each one individually.
- iBooks: The same iBooks available on the iPad is coming to the iPhone with wireless syncing. This means if you buy a book on your iPad you can read it on your iphone, iPad or switch back and forth between the two.
- Game Center: Think xbox live with maybe even achievements. This will be a large social network that game developers can get on board with so people can play together, find random opponents etc. I’m pretty sure the people over at Openfeint are not so happy about this one.
- Custom Backgrounds: This means you can have custom wallpaper not just on your lock screen but also behind the app windows.
- 5x Digital Zoom: Yes, you can now zoom in while taking pictures.
- Tap to Focus Video: Just like the iphone camera you can not focus in on people or objects with the video camera.
All these features will be released sometime this summer. The ipad will be getting the ones relevant to it in the fall. (Multitasking, App Switching, App Folders, Unified Inboxes, Game Center etc… We hope).
